Winter Fun in the High Country

Hi everyone!

Winter is in full swing here at Elk River Overlook, having received snow on a few separate occasions already! We’re looking at a slight warm-up between now and Christmas but nothing the local ski resorts can’t weather (ha!). In addition to sledding on the property, I wanted to highlight some ways to take advantage of the winter weather here in the High Country.

Beech Mountain Sledding Hill is actually a free park in the Town of Beech Mountain. They offer a no-cost alternative to get out and enjoy the snow. They even have a snow gun for when Mother Nature doesn’t quite cooperate.

Beech Mountain Ski Resort is a fantastic resort that has something for everyone, skiing, snowboarding, tubing, or ice skating are available to satisfy your urge for adventure. To fuel up, Beech Mountain has several food and beverage options including a brewery, a coffee shop, and The Re Baron Room for cocktails and light fare!

Sugar Mountain Ski Resort is another great option with skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and ice skating. Although they have a smaller set of food and drink options, they have faster lifts and are often the first to open in the season!

Jonas Ridge Snow Tubing is a 400′ tubing hill about 30 minutes from us that offers the basics you need in a hill. A nice feature is that non-tubers can watch the action from a viewing area!

Hawsknest Tubing is a bit further away from us but is much larger with 30 tubing lanes on multiple hills which also cater to different excitement levels.

Whether you’re staying with us, in Banner Elk, or anywhere else in the High Country, take advantage of these Winter weather spots. And don’t forget to check our year round guide!
